1970s Zenith Surf XL-Tronic with Gold Tropical Dial

The striking tropical gold dial of this Zenith Surf XL-Tronic will leave you spellbound.

The Zenith XL-Tronic belonged to the Defy collection, renowned to those who value both design and toughness. Launched in the 1970s, this particular model embodies Zenith's spirit of exploration and commitment to modernization, reflecting the brand's desire to evolve during a transformative era in watchmaking.

The transformation of this example's original deep blue dial to a stunning tropical gold hue creates an eye-catching and unique aesthetic. This watch is a rare find, with its rich and evenly patinated texture and exquisite gold tone. The dial maintains exceptional legibility, with silvered bi-facetted hands and applied indices. It also features a discreet date window at 4 o'clock.

With its superior craftsmanship, this Zenith Surf XL-Tronic is powered by the Zenith Caliber 50.0 Tuning Fork movement, a technical marvel with 12 jewels and a 300Hz frequency. This innovative mechanism, based on the ESA 9162, combines the precision of a tuning fork with the reliability of an electronic movement, offering a unique approach to timekeeping in an era where watch technology was rapidly evolving.

The 36mm stainless steel case, combined with the integrated stainless steel bracelet, provides a comfortable fit on the wrist. The fixed bezel, with its polished finish and godronatura detailing, adds a touch of sophistication to the watch's front.

The caseback is screw-down, enhancing the 30-meter water resistance, and retains its original sticker, a diver stylized with an oxygen tank and the "30m" mark, providing clear evidence that this is an exceptionally well-preserved timepiece.

Condition
Presented in pristine condition, this Zenith Surf XL-Tronic with Tropical Dial showcases only minor signs of wear, typical for its vintage. The unpolished 36mm stainless steel case preserves its original finishing. The dial retains its original tritium lume, and the bezel shows minimal wear while preserving its integrity. The bracelet's clasp is deployant and secures the bracelet, with the bracelet fitting a wrist of up to 19.5cm. The original Zenith crown allows for easy time adjustment. This timepiece has not been tested for water resistance, and the Zenith Caliber 50.0 movement is running at the time of cataloguing.
